Daniel Solomon (2013-2015)

Dan Solomon inaugural dean of the College of Sciences at NC State from July 2013 through June 2015.

Dr. Solomon served 15 years as an NC State dean, first in the former College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (PAMS) and then, for the last two years, as the inaugural dean of the College of Sciences.

His career at NC State spanned 34 years. He came to the university in 1981 as head of the Department of Statistics.

His research focused on applications of mathematics and statistics to population and community ecology. His leadership efforts emphasized the development and promotion of effective pedagogy, the expansion of research and graduate programs, the growth and diversification of the science and mathematics workforce, and the development of programs to make the next generation of scientists better able to communicate science to the public and to embrace that as a professional responsibility.

Over his career, Dr. Solomon promoted a wide array of activities in support of diversity. These range from programs to diversify the STEM pipeline beginning at grade 3 through efforts to diversify the science student body and faculty, create a more inclusive community and enhance work-life balance. In 2015 he received the NC State University Lifetime Achievement Award for Equity for Women.

The Solomon Scholars Program has been established in his name.
